Matt Hyland

Founder

Matt Hyland is the executive chef and co-owner behind the beloved Pizza Loves Emily restaurants, EMILY and EMMY SQUARED. He was born in Brooklyn, where he adopted a lifestyle of eating pizza and dumplings that continues to this day. After college in Rhode Island, Matt moved back to New York armed with a computer science degree and a love for food. He enrolled at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) and has been cooking ever since. Specializing in distinct styles of pies, EMILY in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn and second outpost in Manhattan's West Village pay homage to Matt's childhood culinary memories, serving thin crust, New York/New Haven style pizza with inventive toppings, baked in wood-burning ovens. At EMMY SQUARED in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, East Village, Manhattan, and an outpost in Nashville, Hyland serves Detroit-inspired square pizza, a style marked by its square shape, crispy bottom, fluffy dough, cheesy “frico” crust and signature sauce stripes applied on top of the cheese. In addition to acclaimed pizza, Hyland's Emmy Burger from EMILY and eponymous Le Big Matt from EMMY SQUARED are staples on many 'best burger' lists.
